[Fowler Museum] Property from the Fowler Museum, Sold for the Benefit of the University of California, Los Angeles. New York Sotheby's: February 14-16, 1985. The Fowler Museum was opened in 1967 and showcased the collections of Francis E. Fowler, Jr. In 1983 the trustees voted to close the museum, sell most of the collections, and use the money to open a new Fowler Museum of Cultural History devoted to the indigenous cultures of Asia, Africa, the Pacific and America. Sold at this gangbuster auction were European and English silver, ivories, vintage weapons, glass, porcelains, and oriental ivories and arts.
