Grubar, Francis S.
William Ranney, Painter of the Early West.

New York Clarkson Potter in association with the Corcoran Gallery of Art: 1962.

Ranney was born in Connecticut but went South and then West, enlisting in the Texas cause in 1836. After spending several years among Texans, trappers, traders, and other disreputables, he returned East and spent the rest of his life in and around New York, where he followed (or originated) the classic Western-artist pursuit of painting The West from The East. This remains the only monograph on Ranney, and was published in conjunction with the first exhibition devoted solely to his works.

Hardcover. 7.5"x10", 65 pages plus 2 color and 53 b/w plates, dj bibliography. Jacket soiled and with a tear on the upper margin.
