The Metopes of the Temple of Athena at Ilion.

Northampton Smith College: 1964.

Based on a doctoral thesis, this study discusses a dozen surviving metopes from the ancient temple of Athena at Ilion, to be precise, the excavations identified as layers VIII and IX of Schliemann's excavations at Troy. In classical architecture, a metope is a rectangular architectural element between two triglyphs in a Doric frieze -they often had painted or sculptural decoration, and many of them were figural.
