Thwing, Leroy.
Flickering Flames. A History of Domestic Lighting through the Ages.

London G. Bell and Sons: 1959.

Leroy Thwing traces the development of domestic lighting from prehistoric times through the Victorian era in this popular and widely-used reference. Thwing is exclusively concerned with lamps and candlesticks (no gas) and his style has been called "antiquarian" (Ames & Ward) which should be taken to mean folksy rather than academic. Although the book is now a bit dated and has deficiencies, including somewhat flat photographs, it remains an interesting and useful history, and is certainly well worth reading if one is interested in lighting and its history.

Hardcover. 138 pages, 96 b/w plates, line illustrations in the text dj. Slight wear, top of spine head rubbed, jacket rather tattered with a few chunks missing.
