After Malbone, Dickinson was one of America's leading miniaturists, and he was called "the best miniature painter in New York City" by William Dunlap. This catalog illustrates and meticulously describes the 94 miniatures which were included in the exhibition, and also contains a transcript of Dickinson's surviving workbook which lists some 1,500 sitters. There is also a biography of Dickinson, an essay about his known surviving trade cards, and an extensive and useful bibliography.
