The author discusses painting techniques and processes, "diseases" of pictures, the deterioration of paintings from various causes, the deterioration of colors, "accidents", and preservation techniques. Many of the plates illustrate close-ups of damaged paintings, and the color frontispiece illustrates the differences between colors which are affected and unaffected by light.
