Parisian Goldsmith's Catalogue of Ecclesiastical Silver and Other Work. Printed in Paris, ca.1870-80. A beautiful pattern book issued by a Parisian(?) goldsmithing firm, illustrating a variety of religious holloware, accessories, jewelry and accoutrements, including cruet sets with glass inserts, monstrances, bells, crosses, caskets (both in traditional forms and in the forms of cathedrals with glass sides), and jewelry, including crowns and flaming hearts. Many of the pieces of all types are noted as having enamel decoration, and many come with inlaid pearls or gems. All are tinted gold in the plates. Each page illustrates the (unidentified) manufacturer's mark, a square with a star above the initials ET. The only text given are the dimensions, item numbers, and notes about enamel, etc. The pages appear to have been assembled from two separate issues- one set of plates is just slightly smaller than the other and they have different printer's marks. There is a small inked note- "Mainz 1881" on the endpaper. A striking catalog. Hardcover. 17.5"x12", 29 colored lithographed and 1 colored manuscript plate, numbered 1-29 (1 bis plate). Bound in old, evidently original, pebbled cloth, covers with light wear endpapers toned, creased plates with some scattered light soil, but overall very nice.

[Algeria- Paris Exposition] Notice sur les Beaux-Arts et Les Parfums. [Paris] Gojosso et cie: 1878. An interesting booklet discussing the fine arts and perfumes at the Paris Exposition of 1878 as they related to Algeria. The essays are signed by "O. MacCarthy", and although the booklet has the imprint "Alger" on the cover and title page, it was actually printed at the "pres l'Exposition" on the Boulevard de la Republique for Gojosso et cie. Gojosso et cie appear to have been the publishers of a variety of promotional material in France for the Algerian authorities in the 1870s and 1880s, and the rear cover of this booklet is an announcement by the "Gouvernement General Civil de l'Algerie" promoting colonization and agriculture and inviting interested parties to write for more information. It was during this period that the French government, having invaded Algeria in 1830 and only just taken full control of the country, was making a strong effort to send French settlers to Algeria. Scarce- OCLC locates only 2 copies. Softcover. 6"x8.25", 15 pages publisher's pink paper covers covers a bit soiled, corner creased, etc., but overall a nice copy of a fragile booklet.

A study of the manufacture of porcelain, as well as painting and gilding porcelain, as it stood in the first decades of the 19th century, with an extensive glossary. Daudenart was the longtime proprietor and manager of the factory of Saint Amand-les-Eaux, and wrote several books on the techniques of porcelain and pottery manufacture. Solon spends most of his lengthy entry on this title complaining that, although Daudenart was well trained in the almost-obsolete technique of making soft-paste "fritted" body china, he chose to write a book about the manufacture of hard-paste porcelain instead. Sometimes Solon was very difficult to please. Branner. 2 volumes. Hardcover. 4.25"x7", xviii + 403 + 443 pages, plus 4 folding engraved plates bound in old boards with new leather spines with red labels and gilt titles a little internal toning and soil, plate edges a bit soiled and tatty, but overall a nice set.
