Bolton, Ethel S. American Wax Portraits. Boston Houghton Mifflin Company: 1929. Edition limited to 550 copies. First published as "Wax Portraits and Silhouettes" in 1914, this is the first and only monograph on American wax portraits. The initial research for this project was undertaken for a talk before the Society of Colonial Dames. The Society's exhibition of wax portraits, silhouettes and miniatures, mounted in 1913-14, brought together many of the examples on which this study was based. For this edition the text has been revised, amplified, and focused on the waxes. Three plates of waxes were deleted and ten added. Hardcover. 6.5"x9", 68 pages, plus 16 b/w plates. Covers with some soil, gouge at the top of the rear hinge. Light scattered soil and a little foxing.

Dearborn, Mona L. Anson Dickinson. The Celebrated Miniature Painter, 1779-1852. Hartford Connecticut Historical Society: 1983. The definitive catalog of this noted miniaturist's work. After Malbone, Dickinson was one of America's leading miniaturists, and he was called "the best miniature painter in New York City" by William Dunlap. This catalog illustrates and meticulously describes the 94 miniatures which were included in the exhibition, and also contains a transcript of Dickinson's surviving workbook which lists some 1,500 sitters. There is also a biography of Dickinson, an essay about his known surviving trade cards, and an extensive and useful bibliography. Softcover. 4"x6.5", 187 pages, color and b/w illustrations. New.

Exhibition of Early American Paintings, Miniatures and Silver Assembled by the Washington Loan Exhibition Committee. Washington National Gallery of Art: 1925. The catalog of an early loan exhibition of American works. The short introduction to the Miniatures section was written by Albert Rosenthal. The somewhat longer introduction to the silver was written by Elizabeth Benton of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Members of the Committee on Silver included Hollis French and Luke Vincent Lockwood. The silver was categorized into New England wares New York Philadelphia, Baltimore, Annapolis & Washington, and Anonymous makers. English and European portrait miniatures comprise lots 4-95. The Wills Collection of Commonwealth silver comprises lots 211-246. Sir Peter Wills formed this collection, with the assistance of silver expert G.E.P. How, while on active duty with the Coldstream Guards in the Second World War, and its quality is outstanding. When Sir Peter was killed in combat in Italy a few days before the war ended, the collection passed to his brother and had been in storage until this sale. [Lawton] Rare and Valuable American Furniture, Paintings, Silver... from the Collection of Herbert Lawton, Boston, Mass. New York American Art Association: April 2nd-3rd, 1937. Sale 4314. An important sale of American silver and furniture, including pieces by Phyfe, Townsend, Goddard, Seymour, McIntire, Coney, Revere, Burt, etc. There was also an outstanding collection of American portrait miniatures, including works by Peale, Fraser, Malbone, Inman, Copley, the Birch enamel of Washington, and Ellen Sharpless' bust of Hamilton. Lawton was a prosperous textile manufacturer who "assembled collections" of American antiques and then sold it all off from time to time... Publisher's original printed paper covers, covers with some slight chipping, a little toning and spotting throughout, page tips and fore-edge a bit browned, spine paper chipped and cracked. Wehle, Harry B. American Miniatures 1730-1850. One hundred and seventy-three portraits selected with a descriptive account. Garden City Publishing Co.: 1937. New edition. First published in 1927, this has remained a standard study of American miniatures and their painters. It includes introductions to the development of miniature painting and the use of ivory, and then goes on to the development of American miniature painting, treated regionally and chronologically. There is also a biographical dictionary of American miniature painters, compiled by Theodore Bolton. Hardcover. 8.5"x11", 127 pages, plus a color frontispiece and 4 color and 44 b/w plates.
