Andrews, Edward Deming & Faith. Shaker Furniture. The Craftsmanship of an American Communal Sect. New Haven Yale University Press: 1937. Edition limited to 500 copies. The first, limited edition, printing of this classic work. Although there had been some scholarly examination of Shaker community life before the Andrews' book, Shaker furniture had been largely unappreciated. The Andrews, who gained access to many East Coast Shaker communities and were welcomed by the remaining members, were the first to focus not only on how Shaker furniture reflected the inherent tenets of Shaker society, but on Shaker furniture as an important art form worth examination in its own right. They integrated their study of the two aspects, showing how the tenets fed the art, and vice-versa. "The eventual result of this penetration of religion into the workshop", Andrews writes, "was the discarding of all values in design which attach to surface decoration in favor of the values inherent in form, in the harmonious relationship of parts and the perfected unity of the whole. Under such conditions, if the design was well conceived, an effort of rare charm was achieved... The ideal of purity, broadly conceived as it was, furnished sufficient justification for such a theory of workmanship... A natural frankness characterized the finished Shaker product... One's primary impression, on seeing an assemblage of Shaker pieces, is that of brightness and lightness more expressive of serene happiness than somber monasticism". This book is also noted for the stark yet beautiful on-site photographs taken by William F. Winter. Walpole Society member and Magazine Antiques editor Homer Eaton Keyes wrote the Preface. Hardcover. 8.5"x11.5", 133 pages, plus 48 b/w plates. Publisher's red cloth with green paper labels covers with some soil, rubbing, etc. Endpapers with light soil & spotting.

Koomler, Sharon Duane. Seen and Received: The Shakers' Private Art. Pittsfield Hancock Shaker village: 2000. Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts, preserved as a museum of Shaker culture, here presents and describes 25 of these rare pieces, including two "spirit sheets"-indecipherable visible expressions of messages in unknown tongues received in an ecstatic trance." Miller, M. Stephen. From Shaker Lands and Shaker Hands. A Survey of the Industries. Hanover University Press of New England: 2007. This book "documents the surprising breadth and depths of the industries pursued by the Shaker communities, from the well-known Shaker chairs to seeds, herbal medicines, textiles, and foodstuffs. While much has been written about Shaker philosophy and its manifestations in the Shakers' material culture, scant attention has been paid to the vibrant economic life needed to support their communal way of life. As this collection shows, each community engaged in a broad range of commercial activities, astutely marketing not only the products of their farms and craft shops, but also establishing a level of quality widely associated with the word 'Shaker'. This lavishly illustrated full-color book documents the products, their sophisticated packaging, and the marketing strategies employed by the Shakers over a span of two hundred years". Softcover. 8.5"x11", 190 pages, color illustrations. New.

Miller, M. Stephen. Inspired Innovations. A Celebration of Shaker Ingenuity. Hanover university Press of New England: 2010. "Since the late eighteenth century, Shakers have exerted an influence on our nation wholly disproportionate to the size of their communities. Their approach has helped shape everything from craftsmanship and ingenuity to concepts of communal living and work ethic. And while much of our modern-day fascination with the United Society of Shakers centers upon their unique attention to craftsmanship, the innovative spirit they brought to simple, Godly living is indeed the most timeless aspect of their legacy. From their earliest days, the Shakers have depended on innovations of every sort to secure their place in a world that was, initially, hostile to their so-called "peculiar" beliefs: community, celibacy, and primitive Christianity. These innovations included improvements, adaptations, refinements, and inventions. Inspired Innovations is the first book devoted to this widely acknowledged but long neglected aspect of Shakerism. A group of thirteen distinguished Shaker scholars, led by M. Stephen Miller, presents in this lavishly illustrated volume their research on the many "zones" of innovation that are considered here. Historians Scott T. Swank, Glendyne R. Wergland, and Stephen J. Paterwic "set the table" for a feast of words and images. The book features 350 full-color images, complete with descriptive captions and technical data." Softcover. 8.5"x11", 240 pages, 350 color illustrations. Fine.

Sprigg, June & Jim Johnson. Shaker Woodenware. A Field Guide. Stockbridge Berkshire House: 1992. "The enthusiasm for beautifully crafted, genuine Shaker creations has outpaced the general knowledge of this particular area of collecting. This book is part of a comprehensive series of guides to Shaker furniture and woodenware, providing information that has been limited primarily to a few collectors, dealers, and curators. Illustrated with 65 black and white photos and 5 color plates, it covers wooden tools and utensils used in Shaker dwellings and workshops, including rulers, chisels, mallets, spools, hat forms, basket molds, loom pulleys, brushes and combs, apple peelers, and paddles and scoops." Sprigg, June. Shaker Design. New York Whitney Museum of Art in association with the Corcoran Gallery of Art: 1986. The catalog of an important exhibition, beautifully photographed. Furniture, baskets, boxes, tools, textiles, metalware and graphics are included. This is a good counterpoint to the Andrews books- Andrews worked in black & white and emphasized the architectural elements and spatial considerations, whereas Sprigg works in color and emphasizes the wonderful warmth and luminosity of the woods and stains. Were the sensuous colors imbued in their creations a product of the Shakers' otherwise unexpressed sensuality which could find no other outlet? A beautiful pictorial survey. Hardcover. 9"x9", 228 pages, color illustrations, dj. Fine.

Starbuck, David R. Neither Plain nor Simple. New Perspectives on the Canterbury Shakers. Hanover University Press of New England: 2004. "Canterbury Shaker Village, located in Canterbury, New Hampshire, just northeast of Concord, has seen more archeological research than any other Shaker community. David R. Starbuck has been digging there for over a quarter of a century. Beginning in 1978, Starbuck and his team mapped some 600 acres of the village, preparing sixty-one base maps, as well as dozens of drawings of foundations and mill features. Accompanying the maps were several hundred archeological site reports describing the history and present condition of every field, dump, foundation, wall, path, and orchard within the community. These documents offered the first comprehensive look at both the built and natural environment of any Shaker village. This above-ground study-with much updating-forms the second part of this volume. The new artifacts contradict the popular image of the Shakers as plain, simple, and otherworldly, thereby challenging existing paradigms about the nature of Shaker society. Starbuck's findings suggest that Shaker consumption practices were highly complex and that Shakers were perhaps more "human" than previously imagined. Neither Plain nor Simple, which brings together the original site maps with his most recent findings, will serve as the definitive archeological investigation of the Canterbury Shakers and their lifeways, and function as a model for similar archeological studies of communal societies". Softcover. 8.5"x11", 190 pages, black & white illustrations. Light wear.
