Andrewes, William J.H. (ed.). The Quest for Longitude. The Proceedings of the Longitude Symposium, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, November 4-6, 1993. Harvard University: 1996. "After 1492, a key component of global dominance by the major seafaring European nations was the knowledge of latitude/longitude, whether on land or sea. Means of establishing latitude were developed, but methods for determining longitude (the measurement of lunar distances or eclipses on Jupiter's satellites) remained imperfect. A third method using "marine timekeepers," or chronometers, was the object of a competitive struggle eventually won by clockmaker John Harrison. These papers by 20 leading scholars and experts, presented at a 1993 conference, capture in their excellent writing and well-researched history the people and the technological demands involved in the creation of these unique clocks, where an error in seconds puts one miles off course. Also covered is the interplay of science, politics, and economics. The 260 illustrations are beautifully reproduced many have never been published before. Required for history of science and horology collections" (1996 Library Journal review). Hardcover. 8.5"x11", 437 pages, color and black & white illustrations, dust jacket. Fine.

The perpetrator was a nondescript antiques dealer from Florida with a razor blade in his pocket and the unlikely name of Gilbert Bland Jr. His cross-country slash-and-dash operation went virtually undetected until he was caught in 1995 with 150 maps in his possession and another 100 sold to black market collectors". Schoolcraft, Henry R. Journal of a Tour into the Interior of Missouri and Arkansaw from Potosi, or Mine a Burton, in Missouri Territory, in a South-West Direction, toward the Rocky Mountains performed in the years 1818 and 1819. London Sir Richard Phillips and Co.: 1821. A scarce pamphlet by an important early traveler and writer about Native Americans. Lewis had accompanied the Cass expedition through the upper Mississippi and Lake Superior regions, and became intensely interested in Indians and their lives. He eventually married a Chippewa woman, became Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Michigan, and authored an important 6-volume set on American Indians. This copy of this scarce pamphlet lacks the folding map, which is a shame or a blessing for the purchaser, as it makes it available at a considerably reduced price. Probably removed from a volume of Phillips monumental work "New Voyages and Travels", a compilation of original voyage and travel reports. Most of the Phillips sets have been broken up by now, and complete sets are scarce. Disbound. 5.5"x9", 102 pages partially unopened lacks map very slight toning to the title page.

Wilson, Robin. Four Colors Suffice. How the Map Problem was Solved. Princeton University Press: 2002. On October 23, 1852, Professor Augustus De Morgan wrote to a colleague, posing a deceptively simple question: What is the least possible number of colors needed to fill in any map (real or invented) so that neighboring countries are always colored differently? The puzzle set off a frenzy among professional mathematicians and amateur problem-solvers, including Lewis Carroll, the Bishop of London, and a bridegroom who spent his honeymoon coloring maps. It would be more than 100 years later before the result was established, and Robin Wilson here tells the whole entertaining story. Hardcover. 6"x8.5", 262 pages, b/w illustrations, dj. New. Published at $37.95.
